“Hip Hop Evolution” will entertain and inform even the most knowledgeable hip-hop heads.
“Hip-Hop Evolution” is a four part documentary series hosted by Canadian rapper Shad. The series traces the early 1970’s roots of hip-hop in New York City. If you thought A Tribe Called Quest is old school, you’ll be blown away by the interviews, videos, and pictures of luminaries like Grandmaster Flash, and the Furious Five, Sylvia Robinson, Kool Herc, and more.
From the looting during the 1977 blackout in New York City, which allowed aspiring DJ’s and MC’s the equipment they needed, to Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five breaking out of the Bronx and paving the way for conscious rap in the early 80’s - “Hip Hop Evolution” will entertain and inform even the most knowledgeable hip-hop heads.
Premiering at Toronto’s Hot Docs Festival earlier this year, all four episodes aired on HBO - but if you missed it, all four episodes are on Netflix right now.
